The scent of freshly cut jasmine wafts through the air. The kolam decorated intricately with rice powder is a riot of colours. Deepavali treats such as murukku, omapoodi and sweetmeats are prepared for guests.

Preparations are under way for the big celebration of Deepavali in households throughout Malaysia.

An important festival to the Hindus, the Deepavali celebration in Malaysia is held with much tradition and fanfare.

On Deepavali morning, many Hindu devotees wake up early to partake in the oil bath ritual, a symbolic affair signifying purity. Prayers are held in homes and temples, ushering in a new day full of hope and joy.

Open houses are also held, receiving guests comprising of family and friends to homes in Malaysia.

For those driving back to their hometown to celebrate with family, do have a safe journey back.
